The user can select a custom image or choose one from among LauncherPro's own set of white silhouette icons. Each dock slot can also optionally be assigned a secondary launch behavior that will execute when the user performs a swiping gesture over the icon. For example, I have configured one slot in my dock to open the regular Android dialer when tapped and launch the voice dialer when it is swiped.
This feature effectively allows the user to have two behaviors associated with each item in the dock. Assuming that you devote the middle dock slot to the application drawer button, you can still have eight separate launchers alongside it by utilizing the tap and swipe behaviors on the other four slots. That's a lot better than the two non-configurable launcher operations that you get with the dock in the standard Android 2. That's already a pretty big win for dock functionality, but it gets better.
You can create multiple separate dock configurations and switch between them by swiping horizontally, much like the gesture you would use to flip between the regular pages of the home screen. This is useful if you have different functions that you want to have more readily accessible at certain times.
For example, I have a secondary panel configuration which includes launchers for the map and camera applications—software that I use frequently when I travel but typically don't need when I'm at home. When I travel, I can just swipe over to the panel configuration with those items, making them more easily accessible. To get out of the desktop, swipe left from the right edge of the screen or right from the left edge of the screen if you have gesture-based navigation enabled.
If you use standard navigate, simply tap the Home button to return to the home screen. As far as the Favorites are concerned, you don't manually add them, as they will appear over time as you use them. In the Favorites window, you'll see the apps you've recently used or most used as well as your contacts Figure C. You can also use the search feature to search through all of your installed apps and your contacts.
To access the Lynx Launcher settings, long-press the home screen, and tap Settings. In the resulting window Figure D , you can customize Lynx Launcher to perfectly fit your needs such as moving the position of the Dock. From the Settings window, scroll down to the bottom and you'll see the Unlock Pro-Version button. I would suggest using the free version of Lynx Launcher for a while to see if it becomes your go-to.
If so, and you either want those extra features or simply to support the developer, tap the BUY button. Lynx Launcher is not just a breath of fresh air on the Android home screen, it's seriously efficient.
One of the best things about Android phones is being able to customise them. Manufacturers do this too so their touchscreen phones look a bit different to everyone else's touchscreen phones. The number of manufacturer customisations is rather bewildering. No wonder the unique selling point of the Nexus range is that it offers a pure Android experience.
If you want to get rid of the custom front-end on your Android phone there are alternative homescreens, the most popular of which is Launcher Pro , which you can download from the Android Market.
We also recommend that you enable all of its features by picking up Launcher Pro Unlocker for a small fee. Once you have installed Launcher Pro, it registers itself with your phone's Home button. Your phone will need to ask you which launcher to use whenever you press Home. Before selecting Launcher Pro, tick the 'Use by default' box so that you won't be asked again.
If you change your mind, select Applications from the settings menu, choose Launcher Pro and tap the 'Clear Defaults' button. The menu button on most Android devices brings up a set of five icons. Launcher Pro adds a sixth for its own preferences. You'll need to be familiar with this and the menu it launches.
Your phone's user interface, including the home screen and app drawer, is a part of the launcher. The default ones often allow limited customization and can be resource-hungry. The good thing is you'll find many third-party launchers on Google Play that are much lighter and offer plenty of personalization features to enhance your Android experience.
So, let's look at some of the best lightweight launchers to boost the performance and appearance of your Android device. Nova Launcher is a highly customizable launcher with an adaptable replacement for the home screen. It can make your phone look and feel like the latest Android OS. Nova offers tons of personalization features like icon themes support, color controls, vertical and horizontal scrolling for the app drawer, immersive effects, snapping icons and widgets between grids, night mode, and a dark theme.
All these features help you achieve a precise feel and layout with Nova. Apart from the fantastic personalization features, this launcher is highly optimized performance-wise and works efficiently on most devices.
With this optimized performance, it can offer a great user experience while using minimum phone resources. It also has a paid version called Nova Launcher Prime which offers even more customization options such as gestures, hiding apps, and app drawer folders. Smart Launcher provides an enhanced experience for your Android phone with its amazing feature set. A great example of such a feature is its ability to automatically sort your apps into relevant categories, thus saving time and keeping your home screen tidier.
Smart Launcher offers ambient themes, which change according to the colors of your wallpaper. Other highlights include moving your most-used items to the bottom of your screen for easier single-handed use, complete customization from color to font, a smart search bar, and many more. Even though this launcher is so feature-rich, it still maintains high performance while keeping a small app size.
It runs great on Android 5. Smart Launcher has a premium version that offers even more features like unread notifications count, blur effects, and editable categories. Download: Smart Launcher Free, in-app purchases available.
