New Orleans Cocktail Tours. Origins of Voodoo in New Orleans Synonymous with New Orleans, voodoo first came to Louisiana with enslaved West Africans, who merged their religious rituals and practices with those of the local Catholic population. John Perhaps one of the most famous voodoo kings of New Orleans was Dr. Voodoo Celebrations: St. John's Eve St. She has observed a trend of younger generations incorporating more imagery specific to Vodou, however, in the form of representations of spirits and iconography that are Black and indigenous.
Gilmore was born into a family that practices Vodou traditions, while also attending services every Sunday at Hollywood Baptist Church. Gilmore shared that among the many exclusively Christian Black families in Saint Francisville, there are also many who privately practice Vodou in their homes. This has allowed many families who practice Vodou to trace their heritage back for many generations, often all the way to Africa.
And we also know what part of West Africa we come from, because it was passed down. Not only is biological family pivotal to the religion, but spiritual family is of utmost importance, as well. Rich, vibrant religious art and iconography fills the walls and shelves of Carmel and Sons; curated by botanica owner Mambo Marie and members of her spiritual family.
At some point prior to the Haitian Revolution in , his ancestors were sold to French colonists in the colony of St. Francisville at the age of seven. After Gilmore finished serving in the military and attended college at LSU, he moved to New Orleans, and soon thereafter his faith called him to his ancestral land of Haiti to be ordained as a Middle Priest, meaning he served as an assistant to the High Priest or Priestess.

High Priests known as Houngans, while Priestesses are regarded as Mambos are responsible for leading ceremonies and maintaining the relationship between the spirits and the community. According to Chireau, there has been a movement within the last century of Vodouisants traveling to Haiti or Africa for initiations and returning to form Vodou communities in America. Back in New Orleans, Gilmore was initially excited to connect with more people who shared his faith.
He heard stories growing up and saw images on television of the large community of Vodouisants there, and he had looked forward to joining them. During a true traditional Vodou ceremony, Viddal explained, practitioners summon the spirits to grace them more immediately with their presence, as opposed to in Christianity where God is perceived as being elsewhere, like up in the sky.
If they like cakes, you have cakes; if they like mutton, you have mutton. In the U. Finally the head of the family knocks on the door and then enters; he returns with the foods, which are first offered to the four points of the compass and then the children, and the rest of the household. A portion is also put at a crossroad for Papa Legba. It goes without saying that if a dove or rooster cannot be substituted for a chicken, or even a speckled hen for a white one, one cannot substitute an American farm chicken for a Haitian chicken in the service of the Haitian gods.
It is important to understand that any blow to Haitian agriculture, any attack on Haitian peasants, is potentially fatal to all Haitian culture and the integrity of Haiti as a nation. Such a blow constitutes no less than a declaration of war on all Haitians, whether they perceive this or not. It is a non-hierarchical, living and evolving religion that cannot be understood by association to known Western concepts.
Our ancestors fully deserve to be regarded as deities for having established a new republic, with its culture and language, plus a religion to usher their revolution into a sustainable lifestyle: this, while two-thirds of these former slaves were still transplants from Africa.
It is our duty to keep their spirits alive and forever sated and strong. Si Papa Legba est impuissant, aucun service Vodou ne peut se faire. You must be logged in to post a comment Login.
