What makes delta airlines successful

I think that Delta is the best of major American carriers. The experience I had recently is proof of that. This post is a little long and you can skip to the last paragraph for some lessons learned and tips.

I have to make connections, so I always book flights with extra time in-between to allow for delays. Delta the best? I have flown Alaska, and they are an excellent airline as well. But Lord have mercy if you need to actually get anywhere regional back east.

Those of us with a long memory know why Delta have so many routes into Africa and beyond. And PanAm was a fantastic airline that shocking management somehow managed to ruin. Why the US Government did not step into save it left me bewildered. The impact of a company with such a stellar reputation going bankrupt delivered a huge blow to American prestige. Yes I remember PanAm. I got into the travel business back in and flew them many times. Enjoyed their upper deck dining and overall great service.

PanAm was as you said the US. The transition into deregulation was hard for a lot of carriers. Lots of provincially stupid comments here. Alaska Air? It can be argued that Alaska has the most excellent frequent flyer program, which is what many folks are looking for. If you are on the West Coast, they are an excellent airline. But as you mention, they are provincial, as coverage beyond the U. West, Hawaii, and Alaska is weak.

Exactly — Thank you. Alaska is weak because of scope. So is JetBlue. Living in Denver I rarely fly Delta. Nonetheless, if you were to approach this in any scientific way surveys, more opinions than your own, etc… , you will find Southwest to be the favorite among the US carriers.

I get the hub aspect. No first or business class, no seat assignments, terrible service the one time I flew them, casting me dollars and time, so bad I threw away return ticket and flew back on a real carrier. Wile I am not yet a full fan of Delta, American is leaving me no choice in the matter.

Southwest, is never an option, I need a good seat with lots of leg room and I can not get that on them! People either seem to love Southwest or hate them completely. I rarely meet any frequent flyer who is indifferent. What sets them apart for me is their aircraft comfort and amenities.

They do need to do something about the ridiculously long boarding times though. When I fly abroad somehow the foreign carries can load a widebody in 15 minutes. DL takes at least 45 to load a or A I did completely fail to mention the IFE. That is a huge plus as well. Is Delta paying this blogger? You are absolutely delusional if you think Delta is superior to Alaska Airlines. Furthermore, Skymiles is a joke.

At least with Alaska you earn miles based on travel distance, not what you paid the airline for the ticket. I can say honestly Alaska is a great airline and their frequent flyer program is excellent. Yes Alaska is a great airline but as stated they have a limited footprint. No preferred check-in and no priority treatment of checked bags.

Same for another check-in at SAN. The original post was comparing Delta to American and United. It is interesting how you tried to minimize the fact that delta has not presence in Latin America and put up their yet to be partnership with Latam.

A A has a strong presence on its own metal. Yes, the much larger one than Latam itself. Cost is also a consideration. Overall, I end up with close to the same length of travel day. Your article was hilarious. Please let me know when you will post a follow-up.

Maybe something about how MySpace is the best social media platform. I need another good laugh. Soon after I booked our trip first class all the way , each and every flight I booked was changed. I am disabled so I am very careful about the seats, days and times. No one wanted to take responsibility to make the changes and not to charge us.

Eventually, they did give us a … Read more ». US and international service equally bad…. Your assumption that not being unionized is the reason for the stellar customer service is, just that, an assumption. In my experience, Non-unionized shops are always happier.

We wanted to continue rewarding people for their perseverance in tough times and incentivize them to help propel Delta into the future. Under that philosophy we have also made sure to keep our benefits and retirement plans the same for everyone—executive, pilot, flight attendant, or member of the ground crew—and management compensation is relatively low for a company of our size.

This year we were able to pay out an advance on profit sharing in October, and even with that early payout, we expect the February payment to be the largest ever. No other blue-chip U. Founded: Headquarters: Atlanta Employees: 77, And we have excellent relations with our only large union, the Air Line Pilots Association. Lots of people want to work for Delta: In our last push to recruit flight attendants, we received , applications for 1, openings. The demand is similar for most other positions.

We have set ourselves apart from the industry in key areas—asset management, international partnerships, and supply chain. This type of innovation is a company tradition.

Nearly 50 years ago Delta invented the hub-and-spoke pattern that is ubiquitous today. Our goals are greater efficiency and control. The decision to take our reservations system in-house is a case in point—we no longer have to rely on a third party to manage our data, which allows the system to evolve and grow to meet our needs. By taking equity stakes in leading Brazilian, Mexican, and British carriers, we have been able to create virtual mergers with strong partners in our most important international travel markets.

Government regulations against foreign ownership of airlines prevents actual cross-border mergers, so these relationships are critical to giving our customers access to a truly global network. Our alliances must align with customer demand. Mexico is thriving under NAFTA—businesses like its stable economy and eager workforce, while vacationers enjoy its beaches and historic sites—and we have an exclusive relationship with its flagship carrier. These investments have resulted not only in more-seamless travel for our passengers but also in deeper relationships with all three airlines, including seats on their boards.

Unlike some of our competitors, we view our partners as equals and work to make sure they are as successful and profitable as we are. That attitude extends to every carrier with which we ally ourselves. But we decided a few years ago to go a step further. Rather than be controlled by producers particularly those in OPEC, which would be an illegal cartel if it were subject to U. A number of East Coast refineries were shutting down; the reduction in refining capacity and the resulting price rises would have been costly for us.

Initially we looked at a facility in Louisiana. It turned out to be a poor fit, but we hired the plant manager and several members of his team to start building in-house expertise. Then the Trainer refinery came up for sale. Under my tenure at Delta, it has been our policy to refrain from engaging too many consultants. We feel that we know our business better than outsiders do. But in this case we did hire advisers to help us weigh our options. If we bought it, we could begin to lower our fuel costs.

So we went for it. We knew we were on the right path when people in both the airline and oil industries immediately criticized the acquisition. Delta's reputation as the most reliable mainline US carrier, combined with new, premium features in the economy cabin, beget loyalty and, in some cases, motivate customers to pay higher fares.

Even an oft-promoted commitment to having in-flight entertainment screens on most aircraft — compared with other airlines which cut the screens — helps. That's also driven more people to book directly with the airline, rather than looking through third-party sites and comparing prices with other carriers. Rhonda Crawford, Delta's VP of Global Distribution and Digital Strategy, noted on a call with Business Insider that the airline makes an effort to highlight its new and improved products during the flight-search process — giving passengers additional reason to purchase directly.

Are you going to be in a new upgraded cabin? That flag will become even more common as Delta takes deliveries of new Airbus Aneo and A aircraft. During the investor call, Bastian said the airline has moved up its plan to retire its aging MD fleet by two years. The last flights on those aircraft will be in The same as when we ride in a new car. The results have been good news for everyone from passengers to stockholders — as of Friday afternoon, Delta's stock was on track to close at a five-year high.
